The epic battle between Apple and Samsung rages on!
Samsung vs Apple has been the battle in the smartphone world since over a decade. It doesn’t matter if one of them is the best on the market, but they still have their loyal fanbase that would pick them over anyone else. But with current flagship has the better camera?
Which one comes out on top in the camera department?
I put them both through their paces in a variety of tests, from portrait mode to night shots, to find out.
Daylight Photography:
- Ultrawide: Both phones deliver excellent ultrawide shots, with the iPhone edging out the S24 Ultra in brightness.
- Telephoto: The S24 Ultra’s telephoto lens consistently produced sharper images, especially at higher zoom levels. Its 100x zoom capabilities far surpass the iPhone’s 25x max zoom, but practically everything over 30x is not useful.
- Main Lens: The main lenses on both phones are neck and neck, capturing vibrant and detailed images.
- Portraits: Both phones excel at portraits, with the iPhone producing more natural background blur and the S24 Ultra offering more vibrant colors.
Night Photography:
- Low Light: The S24 Ultra generally performed better in low-light conditions, thanks to its dedicated night mode.
- Lens Flare: The iPhone struggled with lens flare in night shots, a recurring issue that Apple has yet to address.
- Night Mode: The S24 Ultra’s dedicated night mode helped it capture brighter and more detailed images in extremely dark environments.
Video Recording:
- Portrait Video: The S24 Ultra offers fun and unique effects in portrait video mode, but the iPhone’s Cinematic mode delivers better focus and overall quality.
- Action Mode: Both phones offer excellent stabilization, with the iPhone’s Action Mode and the S24 Ultra’s Super Steady mode keeping videos smooth and shake-free.
- Zoom: The S24 Ultra’s zoom capabilities shine in video recording, allowing for smooth transitions between lenses and impressive zoom levels.
The Verdict:
Both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the Galaxy S24 Ultra are exceptional camera phones, but the S24 Ultra emerges as the slightly more versatile and capable shooter. Its superior telephoto lens, dedicated night mode, and fun portrait video effects give it an edge. However, the iPhone 16 Pro Max holds its own with excellent image quality, natural portrait mode, and overall better video quality.
Which phone is right for you? It ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you prioritize zoom capabilities and low-light performance, the S24 Ultra is the winner. But if you prefer a more streamlined camera experience with excellent overall quality, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is still a fantastic choice.
