Honor 200 Pro vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: Unexpected Camera Battle!

  • by

The Honor 200 Pro presents an interesting mid-range alternative to the much pricier iPhone 16 Pro Max, especially for those prioritizing camera capabilities. We are talking here about a price difference of almost 1000€, depending on if you can get a great deal (saw the 200 Pro once for as low as 400€).
In this comparison, we’ll examine the strengths and weaknesses of each phone’s camera system to help you determine which device best suits your needs and budget.

Daylight Photography

  • Colors: Since I am using the default vibrant mode, the Honor 200 Pro tends to produce more saturated colors, resulting in vibrant and eye-catching images. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Pro Max opts for more natural colors, which some users may find less striking. This difference in color processing is noticeable across all lenses.
  • Zoom Capabilities: While the Honor 200 Pro’s zoom capabilities are not as advanced as the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 5x telephoto lens, it still delivers respectable results, particularly with its 2.5x telelens.
  • Ultrawide Performance: Both phones perform well in ultrawide photography, capturing detailed and expansive shots. However, the Honor 200 Pro occasionally demonstrates superior overall image quality in this mode.

Low-Light Photography

  • Image Quality: The iPhone 16 Pro Max generally performs better in low-light conditions, producing cleaner images with less noise compared to the auto-mode of the Honor 200 Pro. However, the Honor 200 Pro’s dedicated night mode helps it capture brighter images in challenging lighting situations.
  • Noise Reduction: The iPhone 16 Pro Max exhibits superior noise reduction, especially when utilizing its telephoto lens in low light.
  • Night Mode Effectiveness: While the Honor 200 Pro’s night mode can brighten images, it may introduce noise and doesn’t always result in a significant improvement in overall image quality.

Portrait Mode – Does the Honor 200 Pro prevail?

  • Front-Facing Camera: The Honor 200 Pro surprisingly outperforms the iPhone 16 Pro Max in front-facing portraits at night, producing cleaner edges and more pleasing colors. But at day the iPhone 16 Pro Max creates great selfies too.
  • Rear-Facing Camera: The Honor 200 Pro offers three portrait styles, which were created in cooperation with the famous frech photostudio Harcourt. The Harcourt vibrant, colour and classic mode differ in color, vibrancy and contrast. Overall the Honor does take the superior portraits in my eyes.

Video Recording

  • Front-Facing Camera: The iPhone 16 Pro Max delivers significantly better video quality with its front-facing camera.
  • Rear-Facing Camera: Both phones record high-quality video, but the iPhone 16 Pro Max offers smoother stabilization and a more versatile zoom range.
  • Low-Light Video Mode: The Honor 200 Pro’s night video mode suffers from the “jelly effect” and does not significantly enhance video quality in low-light conditions.

Conclusion

The iPhone 16 Pro Max remains the overall winner in this camera comparison, offering consistent color reproduction, a very good low-light performance, and superior video capabilities. However, the Honor 200 Pro demonstrates impressive camera performance for its price point, particularly in daylight, ultrawide photography and for portraits. It’s a strong contender for users seeking flagship-level camera features without the associated cost.
